A brief history of South Walden Schoolhouse

The first Walden schoolhouse was held in the blockhouse on the Bayley-Hazen Military Road in 1796, and was taught by Nathaniel Perkins. That year, the freemen voted to raise thirty bushels of wheat for schooling. The following year it was voted that $25 be raised. By 1804 the Selectmen created three school districts: North, Central, and South.

The orginal North district schoolhouse was probably near the present George Mack farm, the Central District became the Heights, and the South became South Walden. In 1938 the building was relocated to the south side of route 15. Holden reported it was in bad condition, but performed enough repairs for schooling to continue through the next year. By the mid 1960s the schools had been modernised with plumbing and electricity. Parent and community groups contributed with labor, materials, and money, some of which was matched with state funds.
